Middelburg

There is a lot to do in Zeeland. A fun day at the beach, a visit to the famous delta works, visiting the historical places in Zeeland, or one of the many other activities, there is always something fun to do!

Zeeland Museum

The Zeeuws Museum was founded at the end of the 18th century and in the Zeeuws Museum the history of Zeeland is expressed through visual art in Zeeland tapestries, regional costumes, art objects and treasures from Asia, Africa and South America.

Abbey tower de Lange Jan

In the heart of Middelburg, the abbey tower Lange Jan stands at a height of 90.5 metres. The challenging 207 steps are more than worth the view. From the tower, you have a fantastic view of the centre of Middelburg and even the Zeeland coast in the distance. Constructed in the 14th century, the octagonal architecture of Lange Jan, laid with lead stones, can be recognised from afar. Over the centuries, Lange Jan has experienced a lot and has withstood the test of time under fire and flame. The most recent and therefore also the most violent fire dates back to the Second World War, when Middelburg was under fire in 1940.

Town Hall

The construction of the town hall began in 1452 and is located on the large market of Middelburg. Laid out in a Gothic style, the many turrets and the red and white shutters immediately stand out. In the early years, the administrative center, the meat hall and the cloth hall were located in the town hall. Nowadays, the town hall is mainly used for weddings and is also part of the University College Roosevelt.

Kuiperspoort (courtyard)

Through the coopers gate where tubs and barrels used to be made by the Coopers Guild, you get a taste of the 17th century. Surrounded by the old warehouses (nowadays houses), the narrow street is a fantastic point to take pictures.

Haven

The old harbour of Middelburg served in the golden age as an essential trading city, mainly for the VOC and WIC. These days there are more than 200 boats in the harbour and you can take a nice walk through the harbour along the water and over the bridges with a view of the nice boats.

Windmills

On the edge of the city centre there are three windmills; De Koning, Seismolen, and De Hoop. The windmills mainly served as corn mills. The windmills De Hoop and Seismolen are situated on the water and can best be admired on foot.
